Captain Daniel Berthiaume has been fishing Smith Mountain lake for over 15 years. Our “Captain Bert” is one of a select group of elite Striper Guides on the lake who combines tremendous results with top notch customer service. As our lead guide, Captain Bert is responsible for training and mentoring our guide staff. In addition, he personally oversees the outfitting of each charter boat with tackle, electronics, bait storage tanks. Bert develops the days fishing plan for his charter staff. While on the water Bert communicates and coordinates our charter fleet to get our Captains on the big fish – on time and on target!
The Story of Captain Bert
Captain Daniel Berthiaume made a name for himself net minding in the NHL for 8 seasons as well as other professional hockey teams including the Roanoke Express and the Greensboro Generals. Therefore, when you book a trip with Capt. Bert not only will you be able to share experiences and knowledge in both the sport of fishing as well as the world of professional ice hockey. And most of all, you will also hear about the many striper citations that have landed in his net!

Captain Bert’s 2020 Sportsman Masters 247 is equipped to get you and your fishing party on the fish quickly, and comfortably. A 300 HP Yamaha outboard means we can get you on around the lake in short order, no matter where the stripers are breaking. Our state of the art electronics suite includes a fully integrated Garmin 1242 Force 57 sonar/ side looking sonar bundle and navigation system.
Bert’s top of the line tackle, rods and reels ensures that when we get em’ on the hook – we’ll get em’ in the boat. In other words, it all adds up to one of the best equipped dedicated striper fishing boats on Smith Mountain Lake!

Am finally getting around to writing you a note to tell you how much Walt, Mark, Eric–and especially Griffin–enjoyed the fishing trip on the 16th. I know Griffin will always remember his 9th birthday gift from his Aunt Mary. Walt raved about the trip–and believe me, Walt doesn’t rave about many things! He said Bert was so good with Eric–and my two sons enjoyed talking to him so much. I cooked some of the fish that night and they were really good!
